The Effect of the Communication Training Program on Interpersonal Relationship Improvement for Families of Chronic Mentally Ill Patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the ef fectiveness of the communication training program in helping families of chronic mentally ill patients. A guasi-experimental pre-post design was used to as sess the effects of the program. The program that used for communication train ing was based on communication training program usd in KCC(Korea Counseling Center) and transactional analysis program used in KATA( Korea Academy for Transactional Analysis) and re constructed by author. The effectiveness of the program in terms of the relationship changes was investigated through RCS(Relationship Change Scale) developed by Schien and Guerney. A total of 1() long-term men tally ill patients family care providers participated in the study. The program was performed 6 times, once a week, and 2 hours a time:, in the fashion of lectures and free discussions among the multiple family groups from J une 8 to July 13, 1999. The result of this study is surnmaried as follows : 1. The communication training program was effec tive in improving the interpersonal relationship in the families of chronic mentally ill patients. 2. The communication training program was effec tive in improving the feeling of sensitivity, inti macy, communication, openness, mutual unders:anding for personal relation. 3. Together with this result, the necessity of the further study on the development and the appli cation of family program is strongly suggested.
