The Drinking Experience of Women Alcoholics

Abstract
was to understand the drinking experience of women alcoholics. The participants were 8 women alcoholics with admission of psychiatric hospital. Data collection was done through their chart and in-depth interview with participants. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s(1978) method of phenomenology. 13 clusters of themes were categorized from the transcripts. These results were integrated into the essential structure of the drinking experience of women alcoholics. 1) Women usually conceal their suffering by drinking, rather express the feeling of sadness, hatefulness. loneliness, and difficult life events. 2) Women alcoholics show some relation with genetic factor, emotional trauma of younger age, and environmental stress. 3) The general characteristics of women alcoholic are more intrinsic, critic, pursuing perfectness, and obsessive to cleanness. 4) Women progress alcoholic slowly and are more difficult to find alcoholic symptoms because they drink alone. 5) Women drink alcohol small and less often than men, but progress alcoholic rapidly and struggle with more serious withdrawal symptom than men 6) As women drink more, the withdrawal symptoms of alcoholic such as degeneration of gastro-intestinal system, headache, muscle spasm, indigestion, and dizziness are aggravated. It makes their general appearance look bad. 7) As women drink more, they feel more emptiness. So they are getting struggled with low self-image, and low self-esteem. 8) After drinking to get her husband's attention, they explore their hidden bad feeling and commit selMestructive behaviors to themselves. 9) After heavy drinking, women are loosing conscious, deepen memory loss, committing repeated mistakes regardless of their intention or will, and struggled with the feeling of guiltiness and shamefulness. 10) Because of frequent drinking and mistake, As a wife and mother, women alcoholic couldn't fulfil their roles and responsibility well enough. It makes conflict on their relationship. So the husband and offspring of women alcoholics become anxious and violent. The husbands of women alcoholics go out more often and easily, and reluctant to come home because their relationship are not good enough due to drinking. 11) After admission psychiatric hospital. Women alcoholics share their experiences with others and recover their strength, regret their fault, correct their mistakes, and try to fulfil their roles in family and put an effort to self-development. 12) Women alcoholics regret the lack of knowledge on alcoholic 13) Women alcoholics may stop drinking and get out of alcoholic as long as their family do not give up to support them. In conclusion, women alcoholics showed some differences in physiological, psychological characteristics, and in the alcoholic symptom manifestation compared to men alcoholic. Therefore, therapist should be more careful to take caring of women alcoholics and put an effort to developing a model which can intervene, prevent, and predict alcoholic in women.
