Abstract |
Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the current status of clinical education in baccalaureate psychiatric nursing programs in Korea.
Methods The data were collected by surveying 48 out of 53 programs between July and November, 2004.
Results Clinical practice settings most frequently used were psychiatric units in hospitals and psychiatric mental health centers. The majority of schools allotted 3 to 4 credits to clinical practice in which the 3rd and 4th grade nursing students participated. Three out of four schools had one full-time instructor assigned for the practice, and 41.7% of schools had part-time instructor for the practice. Main teaching item for a full-time instructor was orientation (88%); for a head nurse or a charge nurse guider it was client assignment; for a part-time instructor it was nursing process application. Teaching methods often used were conference, case study, anecdotal record and demonstration. While instructors evaluated conference and reports most often, they frequently assessed clinical practice guiders evaluated students' clinical practice attitudes, and students* knowledge and professional nursing skills as well.
Conclusion This study provided fundamental information that could be useful in developing effective psychiatric clinical practice models in baccalaureate nursing schools. |
