Abstract |
Purpose This study was designed to examine the effects of guided imagery program on the anxiety, depression, hope and quality of life of chemotherapy patients.
Methods Guided imagery program consisted included guided imagery by Choi (1996) and autonomic relaxation by Schultz (1996). This treatment has been performed 14 session for five weeks. The 38 subjects were assigned to experimental and control groups each with 19 chemotherapy patients who were admitted to C University Hospital in Seoul, Korea during the period of May 2004 to January 2005. Data were analyzed with the SAS program. The paired t-test verified the general characteristics of the subjects, the comparison of variables in groups, and the comparison between groups.
Pearson's correlation coefficient quantified the correlation between variables.
Results The experimental groups showed that significant statistical differences compared with the control groups in the score of depression and hope.
Conclusion These results imply that guided imagery program could be utilized as good nursing intervention to decrease depression and enhance hope of chemotherapy patients at the general hospital. |
