Abstract
Objective: This research has been conducted on the basis of grounded methodology to identify male students* meaning system on their adaptation experience in the department of nursing where female students are in the majority.
Methods
Participants were selected by theoretical sampling and the data were collected by personal, in depth interviews. The analysis and data collection have taken place simultaneously and have passed through the steps of ‘open coding’, ‘axial coding’, and 'selective coding*, as suggested by Strauss & Corbin(1990).
Results
As a result of the analysis, the research has found that ‘feeling isolated' was the center phenomenon which is derived from gender differences; therefore, the adaptation pattern is represented by using the different strategies of adaptation, which were to ‘be content with current situation’ and ‘to wander’. Surrounded by the majority of female students, the male students adopted the strategies of living like a stranger, "considering a kind of course*, *being supported by others*, * averting eyes to surroundings and ‘being absorbed*.
Conclusion
The ultimate goal of this study is to improve the specialty of male students in the department of nursing by understanding their adaptation experience in the department with reference to grounded methodology.
Key Words: Male students; Adaptation; Grounded methodology
