Abstract |
Purpose This study was to identify the relationship between depression, self-esteem and health-promoting behaviors in the elderly women who live alone.
Methods The subjects were 300 elderly women over 65 years old who live alone in Seoul, Chungcheongbuk-do and Gangwon-do. Data was collected, using questionnaire survey based on convenience sampling. The instruments used in this study are the Depression Scale developed by Chon(1989), the Self-esteem Scale developed by Rosenberg(1965), Health-promoting behaviors Scale developed by Walker, Sechrist and Pender(1987). The data thus collected was analyzed by the SPSS 10.0 program.
Results The relationship between depression and self-esteem had a negative correlation(r=-0.668, p<.01). The relationship between depression and health-promoting behaviors had a negative correlation(r=-0.543, p<.01). The relationship between self-esteem and health-promoting behaviors had a positive correlation(r=0.543, p<.01).
Conclusion It is necessary to an effective intervention program for the elderly women who live alone to reduce the level of depression, to increase self-esteem and health-promoting behaviors. |
