Abstract |
Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of behavior modification treatment on self-esteem& cessation of smoking in delinquents. This study employed a two-group pre-post test study design. The data was collected from 17 subjects from Mar. 15 to June 7, 2004 at N middle school in Seoul, Korea. Nine subjects were in the controlled group, 8 subjects were in the experimental group.
Methods Behavior modification treatment used in this study was developed based upon the token economy. The subjects participated in therapy 60 minutes per session for 10 sessions.
Instruments: The Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith, 1981), SPSS Windows 11.0.
Results 1) Self-esteem was significantly increased from pre to post in the experimental group. 2) The number of nonsmokers was significantly increased from pre to post in the experimental group but there was no significant difference after 5 months. 3) Daily cigarette usage was significantly decreased from pre to post in the experimental group and there was a significant difference after 5 months.
Conclusion This study was effective in improving self-esteem and effective in cessation of smoking in this sample of delinquents. |
