Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to identify factors influence on medication compliance of schizophrenic patients reside in community.
Methods
Total 208 patients participated in the study and answered to the structured questionnaire through one-to-one interview. Total 21 variables of perceived sensitivity, perceived severity, perceived benefit, perceived barrier, medication knowledge, insight, doctor's explanation about medication, satisfaction about his/her doctor, symptom severity, social support as family network, friends network, health care professional network, satisfaction about family, satisfaction about friends, and satisfaction about health care professionals, substance use, medication size, medication color, medication taste, medication price, and medication compliance were measured.
Results
1) Mean score of medication compliance was 86.72(+17.26). 2) The significant positive correlation variables with medication compliance were perceived sensitivity(r=.12), perceived severity(r=.15), perceived benefit(r=.2O), medication knowledge(r=.23), doctor’s explanation about medication(r=.26), satisfaction about doctor(r=.29), and supportive family network(r=.14), supportive health care professional network(r=.16), satisfaction about family(r=.31), and satisfaction about health care professional(r=.26). Perceived barrier(r=-.24), symptom severity(r=-.37), and medication price(r=-.19) had negative correlations with medication compliance in significant level. 3) The significantly influencing variables on medication compliance were perceived barrier(t=39.87), perceived sensitivity(t=47.65), satisfaction about family(t=52.84), and medication price(t=26.41). These variables explained the medication compliance for 12.3%.
Conclusion
From the results it was inferred that schizophrenic patients' medication compliance correlated with various variables. Nursing strategies to enhance family support need to be developed. Increasing in sensitivity about relapse and decreasing in barriers can be hightened the medication compliance along with decreasing medication frequency.
