Abstract |
Purpose The study examined the effects of a praise activity program on the self-esteem and social behavior in poverty-stricken children.
Methods A randomized controlled pre-post test design was used.
The participants were 26 children who were poverty-stricken children attending a community mental health center and community welfare center in P city. Fourteen were assigned to the experimental group and twelve to the control group. The program consisted of 12 sessions for 60 minutes per session, 2 days a week, for 6 weeks. Instruments used for this study were self-esteem and social behavior.
Results The scores of total self-esteem, family self, social self, total social behavior, sociality and independency increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusion This study provides evidence for the potential and beneficial effect of a praise activity program in poverty-stricken children. The praise activity program could be adequately used to improve quality of life and to decrease problem behavior in poverty-stricken children. |
