Abstract |
Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of forgiveness to provide basic data for more understanding about human-being, health promotion, health education and nursing intervention.
Methods The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method, phenomenological approach.
The study participants were five persons who had an experience of forgiveness. The data was collected by using in-depth interviews and participant observation four times respectively from October 15, 1999 to May 20. 2001. The data collected was analyzed in a qualitative way of using Giorgi s phenomenological approach.
Results The participants' experience of forgiveness showed that 'unpleasant feeling', ’injury', acceptance', 'elapse of time, 'voluntariness'. ' restoration and ’maturity’.
Unpleasant feeling includes revenge, hatred, guilty feeling and shame. Injury involves bitterness, physical symptoms and loss.
Acceptance embraces recognition and understanding. Elapse of time comprises required time. Voluntariness comprehends selection and consideration. Restoration covers healing of injuries and reconciliation of the relationship between victim and victimizel. Maturity encloses gratitude. insight and refinding the meaning of one's life.
To forgive others is considered very important topic to understand human-being, and to restore one's whole health.
On the basis of this study, further research is needed for practical nursing intervention to solve patients" health problems, and multidisciplinary qualitative and quantitative approaches for this topic are also needed.
